Forest understory takes off

Posted on Sep 12th, 2007 by richard : forest helper richard

Five finger of various variety , plus many of the broad leaf plants and smaller trees, have very much made a strong comeback, with not only seedlings quite thick on the bush floor in many places, but with many of the third season plants more than two meters tall and bearing flowers, fruit and seed.

this is quite in contrast to both how it was and still is on the other side of the river, this does show quite well that the river, acting as a barrier is working very well with almost no sign of any possum browse anywhere within the forest area currently being looked after .

first glimpse of matariki moon early in the long night , before she sliped behind northwestern hills
as with last year she comes ice cold , still and dark , distant lights sparkle with crystal likeness

this and a few other readings of late have left me just a tad worried of late , if this is not scaring the shit out of us then look at amazon photographs ,

often thought with the sea that the whole thing should be left totally alone , left to recover some , then there could be fishing strips, certain small places , the sea would be so teaming with life again that always these strips would be refreshed , could be an effective way to find a balance .

bottom trawling from space

If there’s any more evidence needed that bottom trawling the ocean floor is an abhorrent practise - this should be enoug … THE DAMAGE IS VISIBLE FROM SPACE!!

From Grist: To you, this picture may look like ants marching in a desert, but among ocean experts, it has gone as viral as Britneys shaved head. What you’re seeing is an image of shrimp trawlers off the coast of China, taken from space. Those teeny tiny specs are responsible for destroying huge swaths of seafloor, and thanks to these images, which appeared in the prestigious journal Nature yesterday, scientists now have irrefutable visual evidence to prove what they could only conceptualise before. Revenge of the Pukeko

Posted on May 11th, 2007 by richard : forest helper richard

quite enjoy these spoof video voice overs, that paint a different picture to the original .
but mainly wanted to post this up for the pukeko, and the little idealistic glimpses of new zealand , like the fence and beaches .
Revenge of the Pukeko

has not been like that here today , strong  gusty winds, trying to stand outside is a interesting challenge ,
when i went for a stroll this morning , startled kahu, who took off, caught the breeze and was 70 or so,  meters up in an instant.

a blinder

Posted on May 8th, 2007 by richard : forest helper richard

total blinder of a day , roller coaster really with a quick fire start , appointments in town, yes , no, work like mad then finally something to survive with.

and mum has helped me so much, she continues to shine, love and believe, like she always has.

a bit of a breather then back here and rapidly the enthusiasm ramps up , talking to new people, pulling structure for the project together, encouragement and support is building now,
initially we will go under the wing of forest and bird, they will offer the initial organization that is needed to take more steps , then just now a meeting with a neighbor from over on the other ridge , the other side of the valley , so this man with shining brown eyes is a department of conservation scientist , ok , and has been working with his community up there,  this is why the tawa trees up moonshine rd look so well , so, instant friend and his place in on the southern boundary of the whakatikei projects new area , thats kinda a stylish and groovy thing to find ...

meetings yesterday also with the wellington regional council , hmmm, yes we can help , but first more contacts, with the persons who oversee each particular piece of the land area , typical of councils, but thats fine, still all totally constructive and all coming together , a very wonderful evening .
old friends

ruru is calling , my door is still open , hope she flies in ...

now, paper work, errr

real balance in the in the sky tonight , stars , planets , moon , in eternal flight ,

the third evolution of the night for here , tipped away from the sun at first , inky black cold soon filled the air , wake again with our earths sweet child , reflecting colors through patchwork cloud , circular rainbow shades traveling across the sky , now right now again in curious light , waiting for us to take flight , is yet more beautiful night

southern cross seems to sit at a different angle tonight

sunday

Posted on May 6th, 2007 by richard : forest helper richard

some way to spend a sunday

often on here , all these  people , so many who already you appreciate , interesting to know what their  interests and inspirations are , also what that movie is or this book that they like ,

have done this many times now , usually it is to download a film , but  saturday i got out a book , all sunday it takes to read , resonating with it all the way , with this book i have laughed and cried, there is so much to no longer deny , somewhere i am toward this way , recognize in it so much they say , it will take more courage you see , to more than taste all that can be .

anyway thanks for sharing
i will do the best that i can.

todays observations

Posted on May 5th, 2007 by richard : forest helper richard
fantails are crazy , the only bird that insists that you stop and look at it's tail
it will flit around inches from your face , a bunch of feathers with a heart , it can turn so fast

bell-birds , are always over there somewhere, the often single note haunting in it's loveliness
to hear this in the forest is one of the richest possibilities that comes

step on a damp branch or stick that sits at the right angle , your backside is instantly on the ground

moths are secret friends , they bump into me so often that i know they are trying to tell me something

have found a perfect tree in an stunning spot , and desperately want to build the tree-house

my siblings  rock and i am a rather blessed man

when i lie so still , clear the thoughts and hug, i can feel it oh so near

sometimes when you do something , you get brought even more

sometimes it is hard to trust and believe that which you feel in your heart

the horse likes apples and the sheep is mad

being outside at night , distance disappears and it's almost surprising that you don't physically travel with your thoughts

my chicken house is empty

the big disk in the night sky has just lost its perfect shape...

the barn needs to be finished , winter will come and this one will freeze

i go to the super market and see very little i want to buy

8 months and no tobacco makes for very happy lungs

the birds that live in the barn are gonna be pissed when i block the last hole

i push air out and vibrate my lips when brush cutting the driveway,

if i get even ten goats the gorse will still grow faster

black beach trees smell of honey
